Sharon and Jay met during our first grand adventure, Grand Canyon Semester, in 2003 in Flagstaff, Arizona. Our relationship started on the banks of the Colorado River, and ever since then we have enjoyed traveling, learning, and exploring the outdoors together.
Both of us have been involved in service throughout our lives in many different forms. Jay grew up doing Boy Scouts and completed his Eagle Scout project when he was 17. Sharon was also a scout, earning her Silver & Gold Awards with the Girl Scouts and serving as the President of a Venture Scout troop in high school. While completing his Bachelor’s degree at NAU in environmental science, Jay also served in the summers with Coconino Rural Environmental Corps and with the US Forest Service. Just out of college, both Sharon and Jay served in AmeriCorps in the Youth in Action program in Flagstaff Arizona. Sharon worked with Coconino County Community Services and Jay served on a fuels crew with the Summit Fire Department. Most recently, Sharon worked as a Volunteer Program Specialist at Volunteer Arlington, a HandsOn Network affiliate. We also both have parents who worked in public service.
So the driven in Service Driven stands not only for the way we are getting around on this service-oriented adventure, but also for the fact that service has always been a driving factor in our choices about where to work and how to spend our free time.
