12th Week in Review – The Long Route

This week was about getting from Wedding #1 (Jay’s brother’s) to Wedding #2 (Sharon’s childhood friend, Kate’s) and enjoying the journey.  The drive from Phoenix AZ to McKinney TX can be done in 18 hours.  We took 7 days.  We packed on the miles, going over mountain passes, on to gravel roads through tiny towns and stopping along the way for a more touristy than normal route.  We toured the Gran Quivira Ruins south of Moutainair, hiked through the Carlsbad Caverns, were startled by a mountain lion at the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens in Carlsbad, and shuffled along through high winds at the Malpais lava flownear Carrizozo.  With a close eye on the weather we managed to stick to a route that wasn’t experiencing storms and only bailed out to a hotel for one night in Artesia, New Mexico.  We looked into volunteer opportunities along the way, but with Easter weekend, there were not any one time opportunities we could find to get involved with.
